Beauty in the Everyday

My Scholarship entry - Finding beauty in India's everyday life

India | Monday, November 24, 2014 | 5 photos

My passion for photography spurs from growing up in a strict, Asian household where children were not allowed to speak unless spoken to. This environment led me to be a reserved and visual person. As a child, I remember seeing a copy of Steve McCurry's iconic photograph of a young Afghan girl in a Pakistan refugee camp, which opened my eyes to the power of images as a storytelling tool. I had one of those stereotypically light bulb moments finding a medium that fit with who I was. Photography would allow me to share my point of view without imposing it on to others, a powerful yet polite version of storytelling. Images allow viewers to unravel and indulge in another place or time at their own pace.
While I started using photography as a tool to share my travel experiences with my family and friends on their own time, I want to improve my skills to create images that evoke emotion in viewers rather than document my experiences. I aspire to broaden my audience base and create a strong enough image to impact someone else in the same way Steve McCurry impacted me.
