I'm a Chinese student studying in London. I
live in a mixed ethnic community where many residents are from Asia, Africa and
Latin America, some have settled down and some will continue their journey to
somewhere else. Therefore there is no so-called mainstream culture but a mixed
culture brought by all of the immigrants. There's a community market nearby
where you can encounter with all kinds of people. So I decided to do a sketch
of the market. I didn't have a set subject and shooting plan, instead, I just
filmed whatever I saw and whomever I met, and thought it could be a real
representation of the community, even a representation of London, the world
capital.
A police stopped my filming and recorded my
details under the law of “Anti-Terrorism”. Some people also refused to be
filmed and probably because they are illegal immigrants.
As a documentary maker from China, I would
like to capture the rapid change in the developing world, the vulnerable
tradition and environment being destroyed under the desire of “getting rid of poverty”.
My camera is not merely “a fly on the wall”, but also a way in searching of
sustainable development.
