Saturday in Bath

The boys outside the Cathedral and Roman Baths just after we arrived

We drove over to the town of Bath yesterday. It is such a beautiful town. Very busy on a Saturday which created a nice "buzz".

We were a bit disoriented at first - nothing that a nice lunch and a couple of strong coffees couldn't fix. Always important to take care of the bottom levels of Maslow's heirarchy of needs before trying to appreciate what there is to take in intellectually.

We visited the Roman Baths which is quite extraordinary. They supplied hand sets for an audio tour. The children had different numbers to press for an audio commentary specifically for them. I did the children's audio tour so that I could continue the conversation with them.

After the Roman Baths, we were entertained by a street busker juggling flaming torches on a uni-cycle. Ian was invited to throw him a flaming torch - an excellent throw.

We took a tour of Bath on those open-topped double decker buses. The one through the centre of the city was a bit slow and the children became a bit bored after a while. Hamish slept through part of it. It did allow us to see the whole town while the children rested. After a quick wine/juice/beer and chips in a great old pub, we did the second bus trip to the surrounding areas and looked back on the town. It was great. The children had us sitting right at the top back and it was very exciting hurtling through the countryside, dodging stray branches flicking us as we passed overhanging trees.

We finished the day by returning to a children's park we had seen from the bus. A very extensive collection of innovative children's play equipment. About 10 different sets of equipment. Flying foxes, slides, climbing frames, pulleys and buckets etc. The sharing and cooperation between the children was great and the boys were able to run and play at top speed for a couple of hours.

Our trip home was very scenic, but we had a flat tyre and got stuck only a short distance from home. We've all had a pretty late night as a result so today will be very low key - a wander around Bute park....and maybe a little visit to Cardiff Castle next to the park where there's a few knights in shining armour jousting today.

We love it when you add comments to the blog....

Memories...memories....went to Bath 4 years ago and had a great time underground too! I seem to remember dragging Peter around the Jane Austen sites etc but I guess the boys would not be "into" that either.
What a simply fabulous time you are having together.

Message to Bronwyn: do not worry re OT's etc - all under complete control here.....just keep enjoying every minute
Cheers
Kate

Got your postcard and was delighted to have caught up with what you are doing. I'd quite forgot that you were heading over to Wales and had been ringing the Uni to catch Ian for coffee -- alas, I coffeed alone!

So pleased that you are having a great time and love the photos and storyline. Sue and I became grandparents in March... Ryan Timothy was born to Tim and Deb. He's wonderful and I have been quietly voicing theological and philosophical names and terms into his ear (not seriously, just for fun!).

While you are in the UK visiting ancient and medieval sites, for relaxation you might want to read the medieval mysteries of Paul Doherty, Bernard Knight, Candace Robb, Bernard Cornwell, Alys Clare.

Sue and kids are all well -- except for the occasional cold.

Once again, great to see and hear what you are doing. Birthday Greetings, though belated, to Tom (18 April) and Bron (24 April) AND, in good time, to Hamish (20 May -- just made it!).

Stay well, keep enjoying yourselves, learn lots and God bless

love
Pete (and Sue and rest of Madden clan)

Congratulations Peter and Sue ... a new phase in life and some baby sitting duties no doubt. Congratulations to Tim and Deb also. We're all counting the days till Hamish's birthday. He really understands the meaning of presents!

best wishes,
Ian

Hello Tregenzas
It all looks wonderful and exciting, great photos. Its my Happy Wednesday today, such a difference 1 day off makes! Not much to tell, the usual, gorgeous weather at the moment. Looking out the study window I can see an old suitcase Cathy has just plonked out for council cleanup, it just may become part of a yr 12 work! A conversation with the student yesturday and the universe has provided! must go and investigate. Hope you are all well. We are thoroughly enjoying your blog,
love Christine
