"Home." they say, is where you heart is. Which makes many places home and creates today's adventure--leaving home to go home.
I leave the U.S. today with my two sons, Connor (15) and Patrick (20), to visit the country of their birth--Viet Nam. It's been 11 years since I was there last--and the memory still fills me. Viet Nam is a place that enters your soul--the beauty, the people, the history. When I returned to the States last time, I physically longed to return. The Germans call it "fernweh"--a homesickness for a place not your home. And yet perhaps, as the birthplace of my sons, whom I love as if they were born to me, in some ways it has become my home too.
