August 13 - Sunday

"It's after 0800" - J

And we had to be out by 1000.

Why did I feel so tired? I went to bed at the usual time if not earlier.

I rolled out of bed and into the shower. That perked me up and when I came out Jon was watching BBC news.

"Why does it say 0641?" - S

Jon looked at his watch.

"Oh, I was looking at the date." - J

Rather then making the most of this time and packing up we lounged and I took a little nap. By the time we got out of there it was after 1000 and the guy that checked us in had chastised me as I was loading up my bike.

"You can turn your keys in at the reception desk. Check out time was 1000." - Youth Hostel check-in guy.

I felt bad about the late check out but didn't really move any faster to leave. We stopped by Costa coffee so Jon could check his email. He had sent news to his brother David about his experience at St. Andrews and was looking to see if there was a reply. Just was we pulled up to the coffee shop I realized I didn't have the camera - must have left it at the dorm. Jon was on the verge of freaking out and giving me a lecture so I assured him that I would just simply ride back, get the camera which would still be there and come back before he was finished with the internet. That seemed to appease him so off I went. I got the camera and returned, checked my own email and let the families know we were ok and moving south.

The weather was really overcast but no rain when we headed out of St. Andrews. Jon had a bag full of golfballs in his backpack. We couldn't get rid of them because we knew he'd be golfing again and golf balls aren't cheap so there was more weight for him to carry.

We had planned to ride along the coast, not to far since we wanted to work on journals and knew we would be catching our return train to Glasgow and needn't be in a big hurry. Well, we did get out of town but ended up taking the inland route which was fine and probably for the best - less windy. We passed fields of wheat and pastures, mostly cows and a few sheep, rolling hills made difficult only by the wind. We stopped at an intersection and found the road that would take us back out to the coast and to our campground. With this type of windy, overcast weather within seconds of stopping I begin to chill and am absolutely miserable. I get caught in this viscious cycle of layering when we first stop. I get cold so I put on my windbreaker/rain coat and start pedalling, warm up but am sweating still because of the cycling and know that if I take off the jacket I'll immediately start chilling again.

I didn't think I would miss the sun and heat of Italy but I guess I do because once I start in this visicious cycle I very quickly lose my enthusiasm for riding and thus we don't go very far because I am absolutely miserable. I think we went less than 20 miles before stopping for the night at St. Monans. It's a really nice campground with a really clean bathroom, heated showers included with £10 a night price. We pitched our tent, made some cocoa and coffee to warm up, took a long warm shower and huddled in the tent for the evening reading and writing our journal, talking about what I can do to deal with the chilling.

I also really need to cut my hair. I spend most of my shower time washing, rinsing, conditioning and rinsing again compared to actual bathing time. Jon is anti-short hair. Not sure why he's that way but it's gotta go, I'm starting to have dreams about my hair - getting really long in some areas and completely falling out in others - I think it's suppose to mean something when youi dream about your hair...
