Arrived in Singapore on Saturday morning quite early - 6am
The heat when we exited the building was well, stunning. It was 28 degrees and felt like a sauna.
However, I soon discovered that I don't mind the conditions at all - I prefer it to a 40 degree day at Swan Hill. Gloria, on the other hand....
Other than spending some time sleeping to make up for the lack of sleep in the plane, we did three notable things.
1. Shopped - and I can tell you that Orchard Road shopping is not cheap.
Even worse is the cost of food. We went to a supermarket and thought that the vegetables were a little dearer than home and the meat, at first, seemed compatible BUT it was priced at $$ per 100 grams not $$ per kilo. When a piece of meat has a price tag of $24 and is only 100 grams, you quickly realise that it is $240 per kilogram. Mind you, the only livestock we saw were at the zoo and the island is too samll for any agricultural pursuits although there could be vegetables and fruit grown there somewhere.
2. Went to the Botanic gardens and saw the most magnificant orchid garden. I can't find words to describe how beautiful it was.
3. Visited the Sinapore zoo - easily the best we have seen. The animals are not behind wire fences - they have a "moat" around their pen and they simply cannot get out - and they feel almost close enough to touch.
The other thing that struck us was how incredibly clean Singapore is - any rubbish that is there, such as a piece of paper, looks completely out of place. A complete contrast to any other place we have ever seen
And green - trees, bushes, flowers and grass. We discovered that Singapore has over 2,000 mm of rain a year, so it's little wonder that it is so muggy and green.
Anyway, we have a plane to catch in the next few minutes so we will be home in less than 24 hours
SOB!
