Cattle truck to Nha Trang

VIETNAM | Thursday, 6 December 2007 | Views [316]

Dear god... we have just survived what can only be described as hell on four wheels!  I think animals get looked after better on their way to slaughter!

We've just arrived in Nha Trang from Hoi An on the overnight bus.  The bus was full to capacity, so no 'two seats per person' this time....  All of the passengers were tourists...  Again no loo....  The drivers seemed to be on a World Record mission to get from A to B in the quickest time possible which meant driving as fast as possible on the wrong side of the road and overtaking ALL the traffic!  This meant that we overshot a huge bump in the road and ended up with a puncture..!  Cut to: 35 tourists in the ar*e end of no-where waiting for the tyre to be fixed...!  Fortunately the 'roadside garage' industry is booming in Vietnam so it didn't take too long!

Back on the bus: it's getting hotter.  The so-called Air Conditioning seems to have expired along with most of our companion's deoderant!  One young lad had decided to try some 'local' noodle soup at the previous stop, that accompanied by a few cans of beer and some big, big bumps meant that he, and the rest of the bus, saw the contents of his tea.. again....

That said, looking back now, having had a snooze, showered and off out for some dinner, it didn't seem all that bad!  Part of the adventure!

However, we have booked ourselves on the Reunification Express train tomorrow night in one of their sleeper carriages so that we can arrive in Saigon in style!

Phew.

We plan to spend a few days in Saigon visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Remnants Museum before a bus (argh) to Cambodia on Tuesday/Weds next week.

Love to you all,

B and C xxx
