My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I have always been interested in photography, but it was only after I picked up a film SLR camera and shot my first few rolls of film in years that I began to pursue it. Much of my creative pursuits since then revolved around learning and re-learning (I took photojournalism classes in college) the techniques and technicalities. I found film to be a relentless teacher who told me that I either succeeded or failed; that a photo is good or bad from the moment it's burned on film.
As an aspiring travel writer who also dabbles on photography, I always challenge myself to take photos that give a sense of what I saw, felt, and experienced during my travels. My goal is to obtain photos that will support my travel stories best. My choice to learn photography from the most fundamental level compels me to think carefully and press the shutter only at the right moment. It’s a more rigid practice that requires stricter discipline, but I also find it most rewarding. I believe that this mentorship from Jason Edwards will help me learn not only to take better travel photos whatever the medium, but also to adapt and strategize in unfamiliar and challenging environments or circumstances.
