My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

The children of the Sussya camp are some of the most welcoming and curios of any children I've met whilst travelling. We spent more than three hours with the group in this photograph, and it was hard to realise that children who were so ambitious and open were under threat every day from being attacked by settlers from the near-by settlement.

A tattered Palestinian flag flys in the bedouin camp of Sussya. In the background is a large settlement, which seems somewhat ironic, as the water and crops that the settlers live off was the property of the tribe only 5 years ago. Now, their water is contaminated, they have no crops, and they receive regular attacks on their tents and residents.

As protests and demonstrations are such an integral part of the lives of Palestinians, I spent much of my time attending these events in the hope to portray another side to them that is not necessarily as readily aired on Western media coverage. This particular protest started as a football match, with the Palestinian pictured playing as the goal keeper. With the emphasis being put on the peaceful nature of the protest, it was discouraging to see how rapidly the army resorted to heavy-handedness and tear-gas.
