travel photography with an iPod

Well, this is the first time I have tried to travel exclusively with a digital camera and no laptop. It certainly beats lugging a 20Kg case of camera bodies, lenses and film around with the iPod and camera weighing in at a mere 1200g.

Still, there is a long way to go and the iPod as a travel storage device leaves tons to be desired.

For a start, the propriaetary battery and cables are a pain in the arse. We lost the power cable somewhere between Sydney and Tokyo (maybe the kids swallowed it) but then we either have to find a new one (not easy) or have a dead device. Maybe oneday they'll make a version that runs on AA batteries.

Then there is the minor problem that you can't display the images you have just taken on a TV, unless you have taken them into iPhoto first and then back onto the iPod. What a waste of time that is. Maybe the new video model fixes this? Does anyone know?

And last but not least, here I am typing this with the iPod attached to the PC, and all it asks me is 'Do I want to format my iPod?'. Er, maybe not now, but connecting would be nice so I can upload some of the photo's I have just taken to this journal.

Bah. Humbug. There have to be better devices than this.
