My Scholarship entry - The Villagers of Dhimbam Hills

Students line up and eagerly wait for the day's special lunch. In this and many other nearby villages, residents are lucky to receive one meal of rice a day, and thus malnutrition becomes a major issue, especially to kids.

Several girls at the village's only school laugh and clap as a guest speaker tells them stories and sings with them. The girls pictured range from elementary school to high school ages as all of the village's students are taught together in a single-room building by one teacher. Each age group sits on the floor in a different corner of the school room for their studies.

Two of the village's older residents kneel to pray before a meal one afternoon. Though beliefs vary from village to village, faith is an important part of villagers' daily lives. With problems such as little access to basic medical care and frequent water shortages, the villagers often rely on prayer and their faith to help them work through these difficult situations.
