Ladakhi ponies make for hardy companions for anyone trying to cross the high mountain passes that Ladakh is famed for and named after. This is at Digar La, at 5,300m to 5,400m - depending on whom you ask.

Mohammed the shepherd, near Saboo village. Most Ladakhis in Leh District are Buddhist, but those that are not are largely Shia Muslims.

Pangong Tso, at 4,350m, mostly lies in territory claimed by China. The brackish water lake appears to cycle through stunning shades of blue and green through the day, but its recent popularity with Indian tourists owes more to its cameos in Bollywood hits such as '3 Idiots'.
