My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Poland | Friday, December 21, 2012 | 5 photos

Ever since I was young I have had a passion for travelling; always wanting to go some place new and exciting where the people and culture are different from my own. At 15 I travelled to Bhutan. I fell in love with the country and its people and my enthusiasm led me to write an article that was published in a national travel magazine along with my photos. Seeing my work published, especially my pictures, made me want to learn more about photographic technique in order to improve my images and express my travel experiences through the art of photography. The more I have travelled the more photography has become an integral part of my experience. The camera has opened doors for me through my interactions with the local people and enabled me to gain insights into their cultures to a deeper and more meaningful extent than I believe would have been possible as a mere tourist. I have long admired the work of photographers such as Steve McCurry and Tom Stoddart whose images seem to reach into the heart of a country, even if that heart is sometimes tragic. Photography contributes to global understanding and winning this competition would help me towards a career in travel photojournalism.
