Budapest - first stop

steamy!

steamy!

Well we at least made one flight on time(!) and landed in Budapest on Monday evening. We lugged our bags from the airport to the hostel via the bus and metro and managed not to lose anything or slip a disc. Hopefully a good omen for the rest of the trip...

We've just had the one full day in Budapest and are leaving this morning for Moscow, but we thought we'd better write something here seeing as we asked you all to look at it!

It's been fun so far. Budapest is really nice and we spent a day wandering round the sights and getting acclimatised to the prospect of being away from home for so long.

In the afternoon, we headed to the baths to warm up in the Gellert spa on the west bank of the Danube (Buda, rather than Pest, side) which is the one wot Michael Palin went to on his latest TV series. We didn't see anyone famous there, just loads of hairy blokes with big beer bellies. So Phil fitted in well.

We're off to Moscow this morning so the long johns are out and Phil is still growing a beard to try and keep him warm. The dreadlocks and other traveller necessities may take longer though.

So all in all a good way to ease ourselves into our adventure. Hopefully the goulash will stand us in good stead to deal with the minus 8 degrees welcome we're expecting from Moskva!

Hope all's well back in blighty. Looking forward to hearing your news too. Love from Phil and Sarah xx

This is a message from Chops - well I'm very cosy sleeping on the woman upright's jacket on the dining chair for the day. In fact, when she wants her lunch she'll have to bring in the folding garden chair cos I'm not moving unless it's to nick some of her food when she's not looking. Fat chance of that though. So I hope you two have got lots of clothes to keep you warm. Nice to read about your trip so soon. Thanks for the map. Much love Chops, U. Cliff & Michele xx

Excellent! the system works. Good to hear that the discs are bearing up well so far and that Phil is blending in with the beer-bellied hairy locals. Got your text message too, thankyou. Hope the sun shines in Moscow and St Petersburg and that wearing all your clothes will lighten the bags.
Onward and upward!
With lots of love Dad XXX

Lovely to get news so quickly -I'm amazed that you found the time - was your hostel room more up market than expected, with a computer in it?! I'm a bit behind in sending my comment - well some of us have to go to work you know. Expecting you to look like eskimos in the next lot of photos. Alex's postcard arrived the day after you left-will keep it safe. Did you see any demonstrations in Moscow for the 7 November National Hol for the October Revolution? All for now as I'm writing this at work. Lots of love Mum xxxx

Hey guys, sounds like you're off to a roaring start, and i'm so pleased Phil is working on his 'hairy traveller' look!
All good back in London. I'm just about to go and meet Mike, Paul, Cam and Macca in Camden, where no doubt Mike will tell them all about his amazing 3.5 hour trip home from the office last night - in true style he got sloshed, got on the wrong train and then woke up in the depths of the kent countryside somewhere. See, nothing has changed!
Hope you have a lovely time in Moscow and send us another update soon x
