The pigeons of Paris are as common as the Eiffel Tower postcards, but to this young traveler they are a novelty. I watched this boy stand still in the flock of birds, almost blending into them, until he ran away, either unable to resist or tempted by the hand of his parent. He's a lesson in seeing the world through beginner's eyes.

I watched this dance from high up on the Sacré-Cœur observatory, where beyond them I could see the sprawling city. This small moment of music-less dance lessons contrasts with the grandeur of the city, and reaffirms the romance of Paris.

This city wakes up quietly. I watched the day begin sitting alone on the steps of Sacré-Cœur. Later in the day, tourists will fill up these steps and voices in many languages will echo down Montmartre. But at six in the morning, as the sun begins to reveal the city, only one other person walks the street and the big city is reduced to morning birdsong and footsteps on cobblestone.
