A lovely Wichi family let us into their lives for a whole afternoon. Their two young boys' curiosity and warmth clashed with the general state of decay and apathy exhibited by the look of their house. What's striking is not that they own very few things: It's that all of them are lying around in the dirt.

In a humble shack, an elder sits quietly on the side, watching some kids play while the women knit. I was glued to his expression for a while before I took a quick picture and approached him.

The Pilcomayo river, which separates Argentina from Bolivia and Paraguay, should run vigorously through this very spot. Instead, it's just a tiny stream to the left during most of the year, leaving behind this desert wasteland haunted by dirt storms. The surreal feel of the place is completed by the seemingly identical girls and their furiously red skirts. As with all the indigenous women of the region, talking to them only made them giggle as a result of shyness. With time and patience, they'll reveal a huge, rich world of hopes buried deep within them.
