My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

A military upbringing fostered a love of traveling, which has become wanderlust in my adult life. That wanderlust moved me from Alaska to DC to Portland. My idea of a vacation is grabbing a backpack and camera, and heading to somewhere new, out of my comfort zone. Photography has been a means for me to interact with and preserve the world. I want to capture emotions in their moment; people and animals in their element. I know two things: 1) An expensive camera and lots of gear does not make a photographer and 2) My passion is story telling; whether it's a place, event, people, or animals. To tell a story, you must have a connection to the subject that expresses itself naturally. No amount of editing can fake that. From this scholarship, I expect to learn to discretely enter a culture to tell a story. Under the pressure of an assignment, the experience would teach more than can be predicted about travel photography. It would challenge me to take the critiques of my work and apply it quickly. This experience would open the door to work as a travel writer, and with non-profits, to assist in conveying the realness of the people those organizations aim to help.
