Russ & Tash's travels

Kinabatangan River & Sepilok

We arrived in Sepilok late with the bus dropping us off unceremoniously at the closest road junction several kilometers away from our accomodation. We were lucky to be picked up by a friendly local as we trudged down the road with our headlamps on. The following day we were picked up and headed towards the Kinabatangan River where we were booked to stay in jungle huts, hike and cruise the river searching for wildlife for two nights

During our stay we were lucky to see a pygmy elepant making his way up river, several crocodiles (one being 5-6m long), monkeys (macaques, probiscus and silver langurs) and birds. Tash even made friends with a leech which Russ pulled off before it latched on whilst Tash screamed like a banshee! Unfortunately we missed out on seeing orangutans in the wild but made up for this a few days later back in Sepilok at the orangutan sanctuary. We also planned to see the sun bear centre but both came down with a nasty stomach bug after eating some dubious food (which tasted delightful at the time!).

We write this still suffering slowly from the bug several days later in Semporna where we hope to snorkel when we have recovered.
