Gennadi and Kiotari Bay: The Forgotten End of Rhodes

The area surrounding the town of Gennadi, the southern-most town on Rhodes, is littered with silent shells of unfinished buildings, reclaimed mostly by tough, prickly weeds. The area had suffered a notable decrease of investment in recent years, leaving these monoliths towering over the fields that probably would have been home to the once growing community of British expatriate retirees.

In 2009 I spent three months living in Gennadi, working as a watersports instructor in front of three hotels at nearby Kiotari Bay in the south of Rhodes, Greece. It was quiet in Kiotari. Many of the hotel sun chairs were left empty; a reflection of the slow start to the holiday season as a result of the poor economic climate. Rhodes island is dominated by the tourism industry, with the endless days of sun and consistent wind ordinarily drawing sunbakers and watersport enthusiasts from all over Europe. However at the time, this scene was not uncommon along the east coast beaches.

The residents of Gennadi don’t seem to worry too much about the state of things, and won’t pass up an opportunity to get together. In true laid-back Greek style, they held their annual fishing competition one evening on the beach in front of the town. Much beer was consumed, and few fish were caught.
