I recently lived for two years in Costa Rica, and I have a strong passion for the Latin world. What intrigued me, during my travels in Central America, is how many people gushed about Colombia. I have met so many people, from such different walks of life, who have found solace, spirituality, adventure, hilarity, cultural breakthroughs, and even spouses in Colombia. When I met Colombians, I never forget them; they always leave me with a strong memory and even a longstanding relationship.
Yet Americans routinely film Colombia in the same way: We see the same coffee fields, slums, and drug smugglers every time. Just as I did in Costa Rica, I want to find new subjects, original angles, and fresh stories. I am a strong filmmaker and exceptional journalist, but I particularly strive to represent countries in an unexpected light. Most people in my country still hear the name Colombia and picture Medellín in the 1990s. This is unfair to the Colombian people, but it also deprives us of a dynamic experience. I would like to offer viewers a new vision.
