Bison are a keystone species on the prairie grasslands. Constantly grazing and always on the move they never concentrate their movements on specific areas. Bison are selective feeders, grazing on dominant grasses preserving vegetation diversity.

The plains bison, is an iconic symbol of the free and open spirit of the North American prairie. Almost hunted to extinction from a population estimate to be between 40-60 million, there are currently 450 genetically pure bison on the American Prairie Reserve.

An important aspect of the project is interactions with the surrounding community, here Randy Matchett, of Montana Fish and Wildlife, microchips and vaccinates a female Black Footed Ferret. Once thought extinct, the Charles M Russell Wildlife Reserve, which borders the American Prairie Reserve is one location of an ambition reintroduction program of the rare mammal.
