Wrestlers live and stay together in theses Akharas (training centres) for many years. For some, that means as early as the young age of 10 years old. The training and accommodation is completely free, with the exception of food which the families must provide for.

The holy soil in which wrestlers fight in is dredged from river and mixed with ghee and water which is also said to be healthy for them. Additionally, covering their bodies in it also helps the wrestlers have a better grip during the bouts.
