    Endemic Campbell albatross chicks glisten in the mid-summer sun as they sit atop their mud pedestals waiting for their parents to return from foraging trips out over the Campbell Plateau. Only 3 months more before the chicks will test out their own wings as the summer draws to a close. by: raorben Views[259] After incubation starts in late December young Southern Royal Albatrosses gather in gams on the windy ridges of Campbell Island to dance and sing. It is not until around age 9 that they will find a mate and begin the process of learning to raise a chick. by: raorben Views[172] Stepping onto a Brown Skua territory, the loud calls of the pair tell me that their eggs have hatched and somewhere among the yellow bulbinella flowers there are two downy grey chicks. This bird is likely still too young to breed and is visiting the colony in search of a nesting territory and a mate. by: raorben Views[447] The view from the southwest point of Campbell Island, a small island in the New Zealand Sub-Antarctic. Rats were eradicated here xx years ago and megaherbs, like those in the foreground flourish. The island is the breeding ground for 6 albatross species, 2 penguins species, along with other seabirds, endemic land birds and the endangered New Zealand Sea Lion. As a biologist it was my home for four months, while studying the at-sea movements of albatrosses using miniature GPS data loggers. by: raorben Views[867]
