My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
New Zealand | Thursday, July 4, 2013 | 5 photos
I am a semi-nomadic seabird biologist currently studying for my PhD in Ocean Sciences at the University of California Santa Cruz. For me, photographs are an important tool for sharing my research as most of the places I work are extremely remote. I am most at home on high-latitude islands battling against the wind, or huddled under a grass tussock waiting for a sudden hail storm to pass, but those quiet hours of long shadows and bright light before sunset are my favorite. I have no formal training in photography and have learned much by trial and error. Knowing and predicting the behavior of the wildlife that I photograph helps me capture the moments that amuse, intrigue, and visually amaze me, but I have much more to learn. As a photographer I aspire to find those shots that encapsulate the personality and beauty of both the wildlife and places where I work. As a biologist I aspire to use my photographs to tell the stories of these places in the hopes that they will inspire others to learn, explore, and conserve our natural world.
