My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Morocco | Saturday, October 22, 2011 | 5 photos

Ever since I've been a child growing up as an Army brat, my parents instilled the importance and beauty of travel. I believe it's the best way to learn not only about the world, but about ourselves as well.

Engaging in a conversation with a member of the community you are visiting, whether it be close to home or far away, we always have the opportunity to enrich our lives, and if we're lucky, enrich the lives of others.

There are places that I have never been, but feel as though I know thanks to photography. The feelings and emotions that a picture can evoke is what draws me to an image. I love seeing a picture that allows me to experience the same joy-pain-struggle that the subject expressed.

I can only hope that some of my own pictures draw people in and allow them the opportunity to feel as though they may been there with me when the photo was taken. That they may feel the exhilaration I felt when taking the photo of the Sahara Desert in all its splendor. I travelled to Morocco for Christmas in 2010. I wanted to be in awe of something, to be moved and to feel. I got more than I asked for.

My pictures from Morocco don't only bring back my memories, but my dreams of the future as well. Looking in the face of a woman who has fought such hardships I couldn't even dream of. I see it every time I look at her picture. But it reminds me of what I have to be thankful for.

I hope to become a better photographer so that I can capture moments and allow them to live forever through my lens. I want to take pictures that speak to people, that evoke emotion and that can change people's perspectives.

I would love the opportunity to learn from a professional and be mentored. It would be a priceless experience that I would be forever grateful for.
