Pointed and Shot

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

India | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 5 photos

Being able to apply to a Nat Geo Scholarship in itself has been a long journey for a kid who used to frame shots in his mind, back in those days when a camera was a luxury for the average Indian. I grew up, got a job and one of my first indulgences was this 'point and shoot' camera that has accompanied me all over India as I travelled for work and studies. Photography is to me the means of capturing the essence of the moment in my frame and that is what I value most, above expensive equipment and technical fiddling. I am very passionate about cinema and my wish is to make each photo a short-film, albeit still. I believe I have a natural sense for framing a shot and with each shot I take, I have been trying to improve my technique and learn the art of telling a story through my pictures. This scholarship appeals to me for the chance to learn from the masters and peers from all over the world which will surely propel my photography to the next level. Equally appealing is the opportunity to get in touch with a different culture in another continent.

These photographs were taken at K.R Market, a bustling wholesale market in Bangalore. It is the other face of the Silicon Valley of India, which is better known for its sprawling tech parks and malls. It is the quintessential Indian marketplace with its arrays of colourful stuff waiting to be sent all over the world, porters, two–wheelers, bullock carts and people chock-a-block in streets that have turned to slush in the morning rain, all part of a usual business day.
