Rajasthan - Pushkar, Jaipur

INDIA | Tuesday, 11 November 2008 | Views [816]

Pushkar fair was on in full swing and unfortunately we missed several great photo opportunities by arriving at sunset. It is very dusty but colourful with camels, donkeys, horses etc on sale. Villagers arrive here from all corners of Rajasthan to trade in livestock. There are competitions held between locals and foreigners such as moustache competition, eating jalebis, throwing pots, tug of war. The spirit is great.

Noisy and chaotic is Jaipur and in sharp contrast to the peaceful and beautiful Udaipur. Up we went to Amber Fort on Elephant back which was lovely. The palace sights are wonderful as everywhere in Rajasthan.

Outside the fort, locals sell speciality ganthias, savoury sticks made from gram flour. We tried some and they were really good. Some were flavoured with cumin, garlic, etc.

(are you getting the feeling this holiday is revolving around food?)
