Inside, everyone is barefoot, out of respect. The ground is strewn with petals. Women's saris are tinted a purple red, the final colour as all the dyes mix together in the air.

The crowd, a moshpit of people including grandmothers in saris and men protecting their children by holding them over their heads, enter the temple. They weave between a zig-zag of metal barrier gates to the front, throwing fistfuls of powdered dye into the air above them.

Hindu women or men don't usually wear veils over their faces, but on this day, they'll often cover up to avoid being the target of mischief. The dyes often come from fabric factories, their toxicity is increasingly being questioned.
