When a church was build in the center of the cemetery, they also built a room beneath the church purposed to keep the large amount of bones to be preserved. The number of skeletons in this cemetery was around 40.000 to 70.000 people.

The Kutnahora Bone Church was one of the holy cemeteries in Europe. It is called holy because in 13th century, an abbot spread the sand from Golgotha around the cemetery. Since then, many noble, especially from central Europe demanded to be buried there.

The room beneath the church was used as a chapel and due to a large number of human bones to be preserved, they decided to decorate the room with those skeletons and bones.
