The People of Nepal

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

This ceremony is called Lakh Batti, also known as one hundred thousand lights.
The photo was taken at Soyambhu Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. This ceremony is performed for many different reasons in the Hindu religion including; remembering the dead, to change the course of one’s life, to give good fortune, to heal health problems and many other situations. The woman in this photo is taking great care to stoke the fire and in my mind, the fire symbolizes a loved one who has passed.
