My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Friday, October 15, 2010 | flickr photos

These photos represent some of my strongest memories of travelling through India. The overarching theme is the vibrance of India - in colour, in skies, in the power of the light. Each individual photo further has its own story.

Indian trains are famous and few forms of transport can compare to the liberation and joy of travelling on the railroad in India. The chaos, the crowds, the chai. It's all wonderful!

Tea is another famous Indian product and the tea factories of India are a sight to behold, churning through leaves in old machinery. Just like the Indian trains, they've managed to get a few more years out of them.

The sunset at the Taj Mahal hopes to capture the crowds and the wonder of the Indian sky at one of the symbols of the country.

The girl in red combines my favourite memory of India; children playing with abandon.

The final photo aims to convey the effect of India. The desire to stare out of the window, watch and reflect. Very few people return from India without having found out something new about themselves.

A key aspect of my photography is realism. I am a believer in getting it right in the field. In my opinion, the key to this type of photography is an understanding of an environment and how to get the best from it. This understanding of the surroundings comes with experience and that is what I am seeking and why I am applying for the scholarship. In terms of my favoured subjects, I enjoy being amongst wildlife. I have volunteered in a number of places in order to gain an opportunity to photograph wildlife. Another favoured area is candid portraiture, again with realism being an important factor.
