am very happy to report that I found a good perhaps great egg cream yesterday - this is harder to do nowadays than long ago in my youth, when any corner luncheonette in the city could put together a delicious combination of syrup, milk and seltzer (like an ice cream soda without the ice cream) with the correct proportions and timing
EJ's at the corner of 73rd and 3rd is the place I discovered yesterday and I urge all egg cream fans to go there ($3.25 doesn't seem too outrageous by current NYC standards although I think when I was a kid they probably cost a quarter) so they can be rewarded for keeping the art alive
speaking of art I went to the Met Museum yesterday and took the docent tour of Highlights of the Museum (in one hour!) - in a way this seems too absurd to even consider - the museum is so huge both geographically and in the number and quality of the collections that trying to get even highlights in an hour seems like trying to truly taste an egg cream from a 1/4 teaspoon of the foam on top - BUT amazingly our docent Eleanor did a great job of discussing about 1/2 dozen objects in a way that got us all into the mode of really appreciating everything the museum has to offer - and probably most of the group went on to look at other sections that interested them - we started with frescos from Pompeii then a piece of African art, then modern paintings, a medieval statue of the Madonna and child, a Rembrandt and a Velazquez... big fun! on this trip I've appreciated tour guides/docents even more than before if that's possible - so much better than trying to using a guidebook since it's so much more personal and so much more interesting to talk with someone who knows the site and loves it enough to spend hours there sharing their wealth of knowledge
