Juma al Humaidi, the ESO field assistant, looks over freshly dug out hatchlings, which were trapped under wet sand. Turtle eggs can be washed away by high tides and hatchlings face staggering natural obstacles. It is human induced threats, however, that have caused dramatic decline in populations.
