My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I'm a 23 year old photography enthusiast living in Montreal. I discovered the darkroom at age 12, and eventually studied photography at a local college. For three years, I assisted a photojournalist, helping him archive and edit shoots from far-flung places. I learned a great deal, but what I longed for was to be travelling myself.
Since finishing school, I’ve realized that the best lessons are to be found outside the classroom. I see potential images everywhere, and pour over the work of photographers who inspire me. How do they manage to create positive change, and how can I do so in turn? I think photography is our most powerful medium to convey information and I want to use it responsibly, whether steeped in another culture or right here at home. I have a map in my room that is covered in gold leaf, and you can scratch off the places you've been - like a vast and exhilarating lottery ticket. This scholarship would be an incredible opportunity to grow as a photographer and as an individual. To learn in the field, on the ground with a National Geographic photographer would be a tremendous chance to absorb every aspect of the process, and to carry it forward into my dream career.
