As a circus performer, Tank is no stranger to the spotlight.
As a circus performer, Tank is no stranger to the spotlight. Her movements are fluid and graceful like that of a dancer. I wanted her portrait to be like a song that flowed and curved from the top corner of the frame to the bottom, and back up again. I positioned her in front of a sheer, curtained window with the light source at her front in order to illuminate her face and create a natural glow. I intended for the viewers eye to carry down her neck, across the sakura blossoms and back up the tropical floral garden of her right arm to her hand, in a way coming full circle. Tank’s body is long and lean, and I framed her diagonally to allow for the greatest amount of her figure in the longest part of the composition. If the tattoos weren’t such an important part of this story, I would have allowed for more contrast, but the color and vibrance outweighed my inclination for drama. I spent three hours with Tank, nearly three to four times longer than with any other individual I’ve photographed. She has such a colorful personality and we had so much fun together, so I just kept shooting. There is an intensity about her as well, which I think I captured perfectly in this photo. Tank is an aerial performer, so I found it fitting to make her portrait about beauty, flow and balance.
