Quick update from Greece

GREECE | Monday, 8 December 2008 | Views [363] | Comments [2]

No worries, for now we are not in any of the places that have exploded with protests.  We are in Kalambaca (Sue i think you are fimilar with this town) it is in the shadow of the rock formations on which the monasteries of Meteora were built.  it is an amazing place!  the rocks are so ood and beautiful, covered in moss and lichen, junting out of the valley floor.  The monasteries them selves look like they have grown out of the rocks.  our favorite was the Agia Triada, made famous by the bond film "for your eyes only."  The view out to the snow capped mountains and the valley below.  the churches inside have incredable frescos and smell of burning homemade candles.  we hike between all the monasteries and enjoyed the fall colors on the oaks and sicamores yesterday and today and our planning on heading to Monodendri tomorrow.  We will probably stay in small twons until we leave to avoid any of the unsavory situations that they are predicting, but that was the plan.  Cant wait to see everyone, i am looking to the 20th!  Miss you all so much, sorry this is so short, internet is spendy.

Jewelia here (I sent an email, but since I'm not sure which is easier for you to access-- email or your blog I figured I'd copy my email message into your blog as well).......So I've been talking to your Mom and we agree things do not sound good over there. Too bad you're encountering this type of issue at the end of such a seamless trip! I'm sure you have info available to you about what's going on, but just in case you don't, I just read that the riots and unrest are spreading to cities throughout the country: the main cities that have been affected are Athens and Thessaloniki and now Trikala; but it sounds like similar riots are developing in other cities including Patras, Larissa, Crete, Samos and Corfu (interestingly enough, there are protests beginning at the Greek embassy in London as well!) We hope you guys are doing ok and know that the news can sometimes make "riots" sound bigger and more dangerous than they really are, but these are sounding a lot bigger and worse than our WTO ever was. Hopefully you are able to avoid these places. Our main hope is that everything calms down by the time you have to head to Athens to fly out next week. From your vantage point, does it seem like you might need to change your departure city? If you need us to do research on flights out of other cities and related transportation, let us know-- we'd be happy to look into options for you to ensure a safe departure.

I look forward to getting together when you get back to hear all the great stories from this incredible trip!

Thinking of you and hoping all is well.

Jewelia
