While out exploring the backcountry on snowshoes, it can be hard to resist playing in the soft snow that stretches out before one’s eyes in a flawless white blanket. Jumping off of snow-covered rocks into the fluffy white powder below is truly a euphoric feeling. Illecillewaet Valley, Roger’s Pass, British Columbia, Canada

Upon freezing over, there is something to be said about the frozen lakes of the Rockies. Surface Hoar Feathers are one of nature’s miracles, typically forming when a surface warms up during the day and is then cooled again overnight. The night air-cools the surface of the snow so that water can evaporate from inside and recrystalize on the surface. By morning the ice is covered with a layer of faceted ice crystals creating these beautiful and unique structures.

After a long day of touring around throughout the Canadian winter wonderland, there is nothing like approaching the backcountry hut you will be spending the night in. Nestled among the pine and spruce trees, smoke billowing from the chimney, the crisp chill in the air seemingly disappears as you imagine entering into the warmth of the cabins log walls.
