    After a long day of touring around throughout the Canadian winter wonderland, there is nothing like approaching the backcountry hut you will be spending the night in. Nestled among the pine and spruce trees, smoke billowing from the chimney, the crisp chill in the air seemingly disappears as you imagine entering into the warmth of the cabins log walls. A.O. The night air-cools the surface of the snow so that water can evaporate from inside and recrystalize on the surface. By morning the ice is covered with a layer of faceted ice crystals creating these beautiful and unique structures. Although many rivers and lakes do freeze over during the cold winter months, many are fast flowing, keeping the frigid ice from creeping in and closing off its water to the outside world.
