Well, well, well. There are no words - REALLY! We thought Thailand had
prepared us.... but alas, it was nowhere near sufficient. 8 hours to
Bangkok - 12 hours in the airport trying to sleep on a concrete floor
and plastic chairs - 3 hours to Kathmandu and one hairy taxi ride got us
here in 24 hours.
There are cows, trash in the streets, beggars,
traffic that would shock even the hardest Tasmanian driver ("no mr taxi
driver, you cannot drive down that street even though you have tourists
in the car - the road has been ripped up for resealing and doesn't
exist anymore!." - he tried anyway!), gunshots to clear the birds
outside our hotel, and it feels like a foreign army invaded last week
because it is so crazy.
We have learnt that they don't even use
their own currency, prefering something more stable like US$... I wish
we had known THAT before! We were even given the option to tip in
Aussie dollars - how nice of them :-)
But we are alive -
getlagged and slightly afraid - but alive :-). A short walk from our
hotel is the main tourist district so we feel more comfortable here
whist getting over the 'culture shock'.
Truly, there are no words
to describe it. It can neither be explained or imagined... I think we
are going to have a good time :-)
