We left Marko & Jaana last night at the airport in Helsinki at 5pm to fly out for Athens. We arrived at 1 in the morning, dreary eyed and exhausted. Our last supper with the Finns ran to 5am (Marko & Mick) and on no sleep, we caught the bus from the airport to Syntagma to arrive at 3am looking for the Attalos Hotel. Kay & Bill were already installed & we woke them up to drink Greek wine out on our balcony overlooking the Acropolis. Today we've wandered around the Sunday Plaka flea markets & had a Greek lunch of salad, vine leaves, haloumi and carafes of red wine in the insane Med heat. This is September and it's hard to imagine what it must be like here in mid Summer July. Oh oy. The bushfires in Olmypia are now under control but there is still a smoke haze around the city almost indistinguishable from normal Greek pollution. We leave for Santorini on Tuesday on one of the super fast Hellinic ferries for 3 nights. Rumour has it that it's at least 10C cooler out on the islands. Athens is currently cranking up towards 40C. It's cool in the tavernas with the industrial fans blowing though, drinking bad Greek wine and watching everyone go by. We miss Marko & Jaana and Finland- by tomorrow we'll be right into the Med life like a local. Miss everyone & hope everyone is well. Kay & Bill have taken to the travelling life like old hands. Dad knows all the best places to go.....David & Clair's bub was born today on Father's Day- a big healthy boy bub called Kaleb Jay after 20 hours labour. "Kalos"- bloody good stuff!
