Melissa's Folly...

What am I doing? I should be looking for a job teaching English, not heading to Thailand for a holiday. I've been unemployed now for a little over three months. I have no income. All I know is that I don't want to be back in Kansas, shivering uncontrollably and getting up at three in the morning to do data entry at a laboratory. I spent all of November in Thailand earning my TEFL certificate. Between the classwork and a few injuries, I didn't get to see much of Thailand. My travel experience has been so limited that I feel a need to make up for lost time. I am 35 years old and I am running away from home to broaden my horizons, expand my worldview and get a few good stories before I resign myself to spinsterhood. My goals are to keep a journal of stories (whether written in a book or online, only the wi-fi gods will know) and to wear out my new made-in-the-USA New Balance sneakers that my brother got me for Christmas. I know that what I put in my journal will probably be a lot of nonsensical drivel, but I have heard that if you put a bunch of chimps in a room with a bunch of typewriters, in a hundred years you will get a Shakespearean play. So there is hope for me yet. Who knows, in twenty years or so, I might have something that is actually printable. A month in Thailand is only the beginning. I figure that if I play it smart then I can get my savings to last at least four months. After Thailand I am planning on going to Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam and finally China, which is where I hope to end up teaching English. Sound ambitious? I get a bit spooked thinking about accomplishing all of that, so for now I will focus on Thailand.
