Sunday Morning in Balat, Istanbul
Turkey | Sunday, January 13, 2013 | 5 photos
Balat sits adjacent to historical Sultanahmet on the western bank of the Golden Horn. Before the establishment of Istanbul, the inhabitants of Balat were mainly Jewish. Now the area is full of immigrants from the Black Sea region lured to Istanbul by the promise of working-class jobs and low rent. It is by no means a wealthy area, yet it is rich in color and life. Laundry can be seen hanging between the colorful houses, children run and skip through the streets, and neighbors stop to make friendly conversation with those they know and those they don't.
