tension mounting before penalty kick
Well, it was extreme cultural immersion. short and intense.
Most of you know that I've hardly ever been to a sporting event. I went to a Giant's baseball game in SF. For the Cup, however, I'd been following australia's games because Steve and Marley were there, and had a fantastic 12 midnight kickoff watching Australia's great game with Japan with 50 other campers all stuffed into a tent with a tv and satelite connection. Was very fun when oz won the game in the last 15 minutes.
The English are well seasoned fanatics for their team. Steve, Marls, Megan, a few english friends and I watched it at one of the local pubs in Forest Row. The guys in the pub were yelling and chanting and singing and getting pissed (that is, drunk) and being unreasonably expectant of their players. It was hilarious. and sad. Sad for the 6 year old boy who followed his dad's example of hating everyone but his team, shouting out what they should do, and his disappointment when his team lost.
In the photos, its the last minutes of the game, when the score was even and they had to do the penalty shoot-out, they guys in the pub decided to do a line up in the pub. funny.
