A Different Kind of Hiking

GREECE | Monday, 1 October 2007 | Views [592] | Comments [2]

Aaaaahhhh yes....a hike through Athens.....city of 4 million in a country of 11 million.  Burning eyes and a sore throat are mine as I make my way through narrow cobbled and urine filled alleys filled with restaurants and tourists and the delicious smell of souvlaki and bakeries and motorbikes and scooters and taxis and cars and buses that line up and quickly fill an entire block while waiting for a stoplight and as I walk on the sidewalk, a motorbike could appear from anywhere, expecting me to move over, and a train's rhythm is unbroken as its path is tucked amongst ancient ruins-an ancient broken column lying next to the track, and the alleys at dusk filled with graffiti become a different world that I don't want to enter as I walk by a man bent over~a needle balanced on curled fingers and sometimes I just want to be in a safe, peaceful place.
