This bespectacled man is a regular in Salt River, a semi-residential area of bad repute that borders the industrial hub of Cape Town. I met him outside Fargo's trading - an outlet store frequented by Cape Town's muslim community for their huge range of spices and exotic food items. The abortion poster on the pole behind him is not an unusual sight.

Naomi is an anthropology student, soon to leave Cape Town to pursue a scholarship in Kentucky. She was born in Swaziland, a small nation that borders South Africa - surprising to many since her forbears are Ashkenazi jews from Latvia, who settled in Swaziland shortly after World War II.

She is seen here in Kalk Bay, named after the limestone (and chalk) that was quarried in this region. It's a small fisherman's village that is slowly being gentrified by the influx of holidaymakers, but still retains it's salty charm.

Carlos is a documentary filmmaker and surfer. The ocean seems to play a role in everyone's consciousness in Cape Town - the nature of water imbues this city with an odd ebb and flow. The nature of water is in many ways a contradiction - calm or violent, sweet or salty, fresh or freezing - and yet such a thin line exists between these contradictions.
