    A view of Sea Point peeks out from between the saddle of Lion's Head and Signal Hill, nestled between shore and mountain. Table Mountain is a sacred place, mythically, to the nomadic hunter gatherers that lived in this region. Known as the Carlos is a documentary filmmaker and surfer. The ocean seems to play a role in everyone's consciousness in Cape Town - the nature of water imbues this city with an odd ebb and flow. The nature of water is in many ways a contradiction - calm or violent, sweet or salty, fresh or freezing - and yet such a thin line exists between these contradictions. by: loverock Views[459] This bespectacled man is a regular in Salt River, a semi-residential area of bad repute that borders the industrial hub of Cape Town. I met him outside Fargo's trading - an outlet store frequented by Cape Town's muslim community for their huge range of spices and exotic food items. The abortion poster on the pole behind him is not an unusual sight. by: loverock Views[403] Naomi is an anthropology student, soon to leave Cape Town to pursue a scholarship in Kentucky. She was born in Swaziland, a small nation that borders South Africa - surprising to many since her forbears are Ashkenazi jews from Latvia, who settled in Swaziland shortly after World War II. She is seen here in Kalk Bay, named after the limestone (and chalk) that was quarried in this region. It's a small fisherman's village that is slowly being gentrified by the influx of holidaymakers, but still retains it's salty charm. by: loverock Views[370] The promenade in Sea Point is one of my favorite places to walk alone. People of all kinds jog, exercise, walk their dogs or idle their cars in parking lots next to the ocean to watch the sunset. Right now, the platform from which this photo was taken is being excavated to rebuild the sea wall - construction crews uncovered hundreds of old glass bottles and ceramics from what used to be an old rubbish tip. by: loverock Views[546]

    The inscription below this crucifix implores the passerby to venerate this ancient symbol. What is going on in the life of the man who walks by it? Is the book in his hand a bible or a journal? Is he a believer in God? Where is he going, and why does he wear that expression of contentment? What songs play in his ears as he walks the streets of the city? Is it his, or is he one of the many who come to Lima seeking fortune? Despite widespread poverty, pollution and social inequality, the city continues to attract many from the countryside seeking a better life, another passerby in this sprawling metropolis. Another bookcover to a story I'll only have read a line of. Catholicism, brought by the Spanish Conquistadors, left a deep mark on Peruvian society. The city center of Lima, home to almost a 3rd of Peru's 30 million inhabitants, radiates outwards from the Plaza De Armas, the central square from which all points in Peru are measured. Catholicism played a major role in Peruvian culture and society since conquest and in some respects it's introduction wiped clean thousands of years of knowledge and belief, leading to the death and persecution of many, and as a justification for the Spanish conquest (
