The Beautiful Okavango Delta!

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Botswana | Monday, August 23, 2010 | 5 photos

I recently travelled to Africa and I decided that the beauty of the worlds only inland delta; the Okavango, leant itself to a story that certainly unravelled before my eyes. Set deep in the heart of Botswana, the Okavango delta is the only delta never to meet the sea, attributing rivers instead flood the land and then get absorbed by the Kalahari desert. As if that isn't fascinating enough the Okavango is rich in wildlife and plant life. Our mode of transport on our excursion in the Okavango was a Mokoro (a dug out canoe) which was guided by a Pula (local driver) along the clear cut waterways of the Okavango as is portrayed in the first of five pictures, here I have tried to keep the tip of the Mokoro in as well as displaying the natural waterways. The second in the series is a picture of lilies; their beautiful petals open to the sun in the day and their red bulb-like appearance studs the water like stars at night. The third in the series shows a Pula guiding a Mokoro through the water, here I tried to capture her under the sunlight which also really added to the waters appearance. We were fortunate to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets on earth over the Okavango delta and the fourth picture in the series was meant to convey the Pulas action against the beautiful backdrop. Finally the fifth picture in the series I hope gives you a glimpse into the breathtaking beauty that I was so privileged to witness. So why me? I am no professional but I am so devoted to taking pictures, be it as a product of happiness for myself or people who view my pictures or if I am lucky as a future career for myself. I love wildlife and landscape photography and would love to flourish in these area's. This opportunity would mean the world to me. I think learning and developing under such a great photographer would be the opportunity of a lifetime.

About loulou1506

I was trying to capture the beauty of the lilies that lined the waterways of the Okavango. I picked this one to display because i love that one is taller and therefore higher in the picture and the other is on level with the water. I also love the symmetry of the reflection in the water, as well as the lily pad at the back which adds depth to the picture.
