My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Thursday, October 14, 2010 | 5 photos

Central Asia is full of contrasts. One week you could be in the middle of the desert, spotting desert squirrels and visiting a tiny desert village called Damla in Turkmenistan (led by a wise man named 'Hadji'). The next, you could awake from your yurt at Son-Kul lake in mountainous Kyrgyzstan to find it snowing. Luckily enough, 'Tarzan' the dog will shoo away the donkeys that get between you and the far-away outdoor toilet. The one constant though is the heart-felt Central Asian hospitality, which will stay with you forever.
Travel photography is a passion of mine, and recently I've been doing short photography courses in my spare time. I've become comfortable with the manual settings on my camera and have been trying out new techniques - although it's challenging when travelling and you often only have a split second to catch a certain moment.
I am always looking to improve my photography and would love the opportunity to work on this with experts in the field. Bhutan is also a country on my must-visit soon list. (As you can probably tell by my trip to Central Asia last month, I enjoy visiting exotic, less-visited locations).
This trip would provide me with a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of photographic techniques. I'll not only have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with National Geographic, but I'll also be able to put this to use for my future trips, including a volunteer photography assignment in a South African game reserve next year.
