After the long flight finally got to Guarulhos (Sao Paulo main airport) at 19:30. Rodrigo, my first flat mate in London came to pick up me up. Also we have kept in touch by email I actually haven’t seen him for 7 years. (Yes don’t worry mister there is going to be a photo of you in this blog). It s great to finally meet again … We drop my stuff and go straight out to Praza Roosevelt (the new trendy place in town). I meet Luciano y Taniela (friends of Rodrigo). It s quite funny Taniela is actually going to Europe while I am arriving. She convinces me to go her hometown (Aracajú in the North East) and I convince her to go to Lyon. On Sunday I meet Rodrigo’s family and have lunch with them. I have now to start speaking or try to speak Portuguese or more clearly what they call here Portunhol (half Portuguese half Espanhol). It’s not going too bad and their patience with my attempts is impressive.
In the next few days, I get my proper first impressions of Sao Paulo … it s massive, hectic and super urban. 15 millions leave here, with the suburbs 20 millions. Even coming from London I realize that the distances are huge and that you need a car to go every where (not really the city for backpacker ha-ha!) … Rodrigo actually has to go to a congress in the North East of the country but leave me his room for the week. The location is ace. It s a popular area fairly near the city center called Santa Cecilia. It gives me a feel of the local life. Soon I get to know the local corner bar, the owner Mane (Manuel) and few of Rodrigo’s friends. On Tuesday we have few drinks there and end up going to Vila Madalena to carry on the party. One of the main areas to go out in Sao Paulo even on a Tuesday it wasn’t too hard to find a place open till morning
Although Rodrigo is away, there is always someone to help or to guide me around. Hugo (Rodrigo cousin) takes me to Pinacoteca Do Estado (the main museum of Brazilian Art) - there we meet Cibele - and go to Edificio Italia a skyscraper with a breathtaking view of the City. With Alex we grab lunch in Páteo do Colégio a colonial building that is allegedly the starting point of the city. Claudia (Rodrigo Sister) takes me to see the museum de Ipiranga (a place that was build to celebrate Brazil´s independence), parque Ibarapuera (a massive park where the Paulistans go to relax and catch some culture – there are now less then 4 museums there). I also visit the Mercado Municipal (Municipal Market) where there is a mix of Europeans and Brazilian products. There are many fruits that I have never seen! With Hugo also we visit Liberate the Japanese quarter.
Going through the city you realize it has grown through several booms – the main ones with coffee trade in the second part of the 19th century and the 1970s with the main modern urban explosion. There are also traces of the Portuguese colonial past. Therefore the city feels like a mix or superposition of various architectural styles. In term of cultures and food there is quite an important influence from the Italian community (which came in mass when the Slavery stopped and the coffee trade boomed). One of the main historical quarters is Bella Vista. But really it s only one the influence … I get a bit more of a grip on the variety of people who came to populate Sao Paulo and Brazil by going to the Memorial de Los Imigrantes.
Throughout the week I also check few times the Avenida Paulista the heart of the city, Main Avenue and first business center in South America. Here takes place most of the action and host massive events like the biggest gay pride in the world with more than 3 millions people in the street.
Anyway the week has been packed with so much, I couldn’t put everything here. I was muito legal! (Amazing) and people’s hospitality has been absolutely overwhelming. I am now on portunhol level 2. I might never get to Portuguese but I’ll definitely try my best. On Wednesday night I am traveling by bus to Rio. New adventures

Après un long vol j´arrive enfin à Guarulhos (l´aéoroport principal de São Paolo) à 19:30. Rodrigo, mon premier collocataire à Londres passe me prendre. Bien que nous ayons garder conctact par email je ne l´avais pas vu depuis 7 ans. C est vraiment sympa de se retrouver ... Nous posons mes affaires et sortons directement à Praza Roosevelt (le nouveau coin branché en ville). Je fais connaissance avec Luciano et Taniela (des amis de Rodrigo). C est plutôt marrant Taniela de son côté part en Europe alors que j´arrive au brésil. Elle me persuade d´aller visiter sa ville natale (Aracajú dans le Nord Est) et je la persuade d´aller à Lyon. Dimanche je rencontre la famille de Rodrigo et déjeune avec eux. Je dois maintenant franchement commencer à parler portugais ou au moins essayer de parler ce qu´il appelle le Portunhol (moitié portugais, moitié espagnol). Ca se passe pas trop mal. Il faut dire que leur patience est assez extraordinaire.
Les jours suivants, je découvre la ville … Mes premières impressions de São Paolo … c est énorme, constamment animé et très très urbain. 15 millions de personnes vivent ici, 20 millions avec la péripherie. Même en venant de Londres je réalise que les trajets sont énormes et qu il faut une voiture pour aller de partout (pas exactement le paradis du voyageur baroudeur sac à dos haha!) ... Rodrigo doit se rendre à un congrès dans le Nord Est du pays mais me laisse sa chambre pour la semaine. L´emplacement est excellent. C est un quartier populaire et animé assez proche du centre du nom de Santa Cecilia. Cela me permet de découvrir la vie quotidienne locale. Bientôt je fais la connaissance du patron du troquet du coin Mane (Manuel) et plusieurs amis de Rodrigo. Mardi nous prenons quelques verres chez Mane et sortons à Vila Madalena pour continuer la fête. C est un des coins principaux pour sortir à São Paulo et même un mardi nous n´avons pas trop de mal à trouver un endroit ouvert jusqu au petit matin
Bien que Rodrigo soit absent, il y a toujours quelqu´un pour m´aider ou faire le guide pour la journée. Hugo (le cousin de Rodrigo) m´emmène à la Pinacoteca Do Estado (le principal musée d art brézilien de la ville). La nous faisons connaissance de Cibele et allons a Edifício Itália un gratte ciel avec une vue imprenable de la ville. Avec Alex je déjeune à Páteo do Colégio un batiment colonial ,qui dit on, serait l endroit ou aurait été fondé la ville. Claudia (la soeur de Rodrigo) m´emmène au musée d Ipiranga (un endroit construit pour célébrer l indépendance du Brésil) puis le parc Ibarapuera (un parc immense où les habitants de São Paulo vont de détendre et au musée – il y en pas moins de 4 ici). Je vais au mercado municipal (le marché municipal) où l on trouve un mélange de produits européens et brésiliens. Il y a de nombreux fruits que je n´avais jamais vu! Avec Hugo nous allons aussi à Liberate - le quartier japonais.
En traversant la ville on se rend compte qu´elle s´est construite par vagues – les principales étant l´explosion du commerce du café dans la deuxième partie du 19ème et puis dans les années 60/70 l´explosion urbaine moderne. On trouve aussi des traces du passé colonial portugais. Du coup la ville donne l´impression d´un mélange ou plutôt du superposition de différents styles architecturaux. Pour ce qui est des traditions culturelles et culinaires on sent une influence importante de la communauté italienne (les italiens vinrent très nombreux à l époque où fut abolit l´esclavage et le commerce du café explosa). Un des quartiers italiens historiques est Bella Vista. Mais ce n´est qu´ une influence parmi d´autres … J´apprends un peu mieux à comprendre la diversité des peuples qui sont venu au brésil en me rendant au Memorial de los Imigantes.
Au cours de la semaine je me rends aussi plusieurs fois à Avenida Paulista le coeur de la ville, avenue principale et premier centre financier d´Amérique du Sud. C est ici que tout de se passe et l´endroit acceuille les plus grosses manifestations de la ville comme la plus grande Parade Gay du monde avec plus de 3 millions de personnes dans les rues.
Enfin la semaine (ou plutôt les 10 jours) ont été bien bien remplis, je ne pouvais biensur pas tout mentionner ici. C´était ´´muito legal´´ (excellent) et l´hospitalité des gens vraiment incroyable. Je suis maintenant je crois au niveau 2 de portunhol. Je n´arriverais peut être jamais au vrai pourtugais mais je m´acharne. Mecredi soir je prends le bus de nuit pour Rio. Nouvelles aventures
