Hello all!
No trip abroad would be complete without debacles on the very first day. Yesterday was no exception.
I arrived at the airport in Guatemala City to chaos. Absolute chaos. There were hoards of people holding signs up and yelling at the new arrivals to come with them. Sadly, I did NOT see my name anywhere and stood there looking like a helpless tourist ( the exact opposite of what I was going for). Finally one of the security guards took pity on me and let me use his cell phone to call my ride. And wouldn´t you know it? They didn´t have my reservation.
Once I got settled at the hostal my next venture was to find food. Any food, anywhere, as I´d gone with no sleep or food for almost 24 hours. I called a taxi and asked him to take me to a nearby restaurant which served typical Guatemalan food. As I was sitting down at the restaurant I realized that my driver also was sitting down. And ordering. I´m pretty sure I ended up on a date with my taxi driver. I think I need to get a better handle on this language thing!
Other awkward moments included remembering too late that toilet paper only goes in the waste basket and therefore had to be fished out of the toilet. Yeah- that happened almost immediately. Instead of keeping my cash safely stored my money belt has decided to rip the bills in half, and when I went to the ATM machine to get more, I set off the loudes alarm I´ve ever heard.
But it´s beautiful here and everyone is friendly and it´s SUNNY! What else do I really need?
